Property News - Legislation should be used 'to stamp out bad landlords'

Legislation that is already in place in the UK should be used to stamp out the worst landlords to ensure that renters receive the best quality of housing, it has been suggested.

Alan Ward, chairman of the Residential Landlords Association, states that additionally, the organisation has announced an accreditation scheme, which is hoped to provide better standards for tenants.

His comments come in response to the announcement of new government measures, which will give people who live in buy-to-let properties the chance to give online feedback on their landlords.

The move is hoped to help tenants find safer and better homes to rent, while offering extra support if problems with their landlords or accommodation occur.

Housing minister John Healey, when announcing the plans, also added that a new housing hotline will be open for business by the summer.

Recent statistics from the Association of Residential Letting Agents reveal that some 41 per cent of surveyed members feel that there are currently more tenants than buy-to-let properties on the market.
