UK 'short of good quality housing'

The UK is suffering from a severe shortage of good quality housing, one expert has stated.

A spokesperson for the National Approved Letting Scheme (Nals) said: "The government must be very careful not to put any obstacles in the way of investment into the private rented sector."

His comments come in response to recent warnings from the Association of Residential Letting Agents, which advises that the upcoming general election cannot be used as an excuse to hold back growth in the private rental sector.

The body recommended that to increase the country's supply of good quality housing, landlords should be helped to improve older properties, while a stamp duty 'clawback' should be available for older properties requiring capital investment.

According to the British Property Federation, private landlords are going to be the only way the UK housing gap can be filled, with continued investment vital for the growth of the sector.
