Property News - Couples 'finding it difficult to purchase a home'

Young couples are finding it increasingly difficult to get a foot onto the property ladder, it has been claimed.

Andrew Hagger, spokesman for Moneynet.co.uk, says the large deposits that lenders are now requiring to secure a home loan deal are making it harder for people to purchase a home.

"If you look back over two or three years ago, you could get 100 per cent mortgages reasonably easy," he states.

Mr Hagger goes on to advise that young couples may find it easier to save for a deposit if they co-habit, as they will only be required to pay one set of rent and bills.

His comments follow a recent YouGov Poll, commissioned by the National Housing Federation, which revealed that 41 per cent of young adults will delay starting a family until they can afford to purchase their own home.

Some seven per cent admitted they had already put getting married on hold because they could not afford to get onto the property ladder.
