Energy efficiency 'not a consideration for landlords'

Energy efficiency is not a major consideration for buy-to-let landlords because of the huge demand for rental properties at present, it has been suggested.

Malcolm Harrison, a private rented sector expert, says: "They are letting quite happily. It is a landlords market at the moment. A landlord is going to take view on cost and as to whether he will make it back."

He advises that for this reason, energy efficient rental properties are in fairly short supply.

Mr Harrison's comments come in response to the results of a new study by the Residential Landlords' Association, which reveals that a growing number of tenants are now looking for properties which are energy efficient.

According to the Energy Saving Trust, one of the steps buy-to-let landlords could take is installing an efficient heating system, as well as a condensing boiler.

These measures could make a rental property more economical for the tenant in terms of heating and electrical bills.
