Property News - Government urged to provide more housing

Rising house prices could be down to the supply and demand for more homes, according to the Home Builders Federation (HBF).

Steve Turner, head of communications at the organisation, believes an "undersupply" of nearly one million homes is the reason for the property price increases and he called for the government to take action.

He said: "We have got to be building more homes to address all these issues. The policy direction of government over the next few months is going to be absolutely critical."

Mr Turner commented that although ministers are taking steps to help first-time buyers, they also need to facilitate more housing for a long-term solution.

However, the average age of a first-time buyer is 37 and not being able to afford a property until this time is impacting on starting a family, he added.

In the past year, house prices have risen by nearly eight per cent and in London have increased by 13 per cent, according to a Land Registry report from April.
