Landlords urged to offer energy-efficient rentals

Private sector landlords could be in high demand and save nearly £500 if they offer energy-efficient property, according to the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC).

The idea that homeowners could save money and ultimately charge less rent if they have properly insulated windows has sparked tenants' interest in finding properties that are economical.

Giles Willson, director for technical affairs at the BFRC, believes that installing the right windows could be very beneficial in the long run.

"The cost … will vary depending on the house," he said. "The lifespan of the window [is] 30-35 years [and] the cost in energy savings soon becomes a very cost-effective measure."

Landlords are also being advised by the Energy Saving Trust to consider a condensing boiler and a good heating system to meet the needs of tenants who want to reduce their carbon emissions.

According to the BFRC, most of a property's heat is lost through poorly insulated windows, despite a third of people thinking the majority of heat escapes through the roof.
