Queen's Speech sets out reform for housing market

Property News - Queen's Speech sets out reform for housing market

The chances of owning or letting a property could be set to improve now that more power has been given to local authorities, according to the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH).

Following the Queen's Speech, outlining reform for housing, planning and local government, the body is hoping it will help meet the demand for more housing in smaller communities.

Richard Capie, CIH director of policy and practice, said: "A more active local approach could pay real dividends in shifting responsibility for housing back to the housing market areas themselves."

He added that with two million families waiting for social housing, the devolved power to local authorities might help "tackle the housing crisis we face today".

The CIH will be working with new secretary of state for communities and local government Eric Pickles and the minister for housing, Grant Shapps, to push forward any plans that are set out in the emergency Budget and Queen's Speech.
