Energy efficient properties 'save a third on heating bills'

Home owners have been urged to insulate their properties during the summer in preparation for the colder months.

Emma Thompson, from power and gas company E.ON, believes using money that is not being spent on heating during the summer for home improvements could benefit property owners in the long run.

She said: "Come the winter time, they will be looking to make a saving of about a third on their heating bills if they were un-insulated. It is about the payback."

Ms Thompson also suggested opening curtains on a sunny day to help heat a room and avoiding the use of tumble dryers when washing can be hung outside.

Energy efficient homes have also been highlighted in a report from the University of Sheffield's Dr Hasim Altan, which revealed the UK's most and least energy efficient streets.

It named Great Bow Yard in Somerset as the best for saving energy while the worst property for energy efficiency is believed to be a pre-1900 farm house in Shropshire.
