Property News - National register of landlords not going ahead

The proposed national register of landlords has been rejected by the new government.

Housing minister Grant Shapps confirmed to the House of Commons that the register will not be implemented and the news has been welcomed by the National Landlords Association (NLA).

David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, said: "We are very pleased that the government is rejecting previous attempts to introduce a register; it was the wrong way to go about raising standards in the private-rented sector."

The NLA had branded the national register as "flawed" since the idea was initially introduced and this view was shared by Mr Shapps who was worried it could become "another HIPs".

He had earlier expressed his concerns that the register would not encourage people to invest in houses for private renters.

Mr Shapps has also outlined the government's aim to make housing more affordable for the first-time buyer, with one of its plans being to build more properties.
