Property News - Properties 'not available for everyone'

The idea that everybody will own a property has been branded a myth by the National Landlords Association.

Vicenzo Rampulla, public affairs manager at the organisation, said the proposal is one that the government has "swallowed completely".

He was speaking after a speech by Grant Shapps, in which the housing minister outlined the coalition's aim to help first-time buyers into the housing market.

Mr Rampulla said: "The reality is that the government [is] now just pushing people into homeownership because an alternative would be the harder path."

He went on to explain that houses prices, which have risen 121 per cent in the last decade, are too expensive for most consumers, stating 75 per cent of people wanting a home can not afford a mortgage.

The speech by Mr Shapps included plans to build more new homes as well as encouraging lenders to help people into the market as the government tries to increase the amount of homeownership.
