Property News - Demand for UK property rising, figures show

More people appear to be interested in buying a home in the UK, as the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) has observed an increase in demand.

Figures from the organisation revealed the average branch saw registrations by 279 house hunters in June, compared to 265 the previous month.

And the proportion of potential first-time buyers among them remained steady at 21 per cent.

The NAEA suggested the rise in stamp duty threshold to £250,000 may be contributing, although president Michael Jones called for more finance to be made available to those hoping to purchase a property.

"If the banks ease up on mortgage lending restrictions then with a bit of luck, the summer months will see the sales figure rise in line with demand," he said.

The figures follow research from Defaqto showing the availability of discount mortgages has dropped by 72 per cent in the last three years.
