Homeowners to carry out improvements?

Homeowners will adopt a "more positive attitude" to improving their properties once the summer is over, one expert has indicated.

>Director of the National Home Improvement Council Andrew Leech said individuals will think about fitting new kitchens and bathrooms over the next few months.

"[People may be] also taking a look at what needs to be done following last year's bad winter, because this is now the appropriate time to do that and then start putting things right," he added.

Mr Leech also noted many Britons may decide to improve the energy efficiency of their dwellings by installing cavity wall insulation and draft-proofing doors and windows.

Figures from GfK Retail and Technology UK show the DIY and gardening sector saw growth of 2.1 per cent in June, following increases of 4.2 per cent in May and 4.7 per cent in April.

The market value of the two stood at £5.8 billion for the first half of this year.
