More homes 'need to be constructed'

A new planning system needs to be created to prevent a further reduction in the number of homes being constructed, one expert has suggested.

Head of communications at the Home Builders Federation Steve Turner said the regional spatial strategies that have been scrapped formed an integral part of the previous regime's system.

"Last year we built less than at any time since 1923 and so we are urging the government to take steps to make sure it doesn't drop any lower," he added.

Mr Turner stated how the prime minister deals with this will affect the future of the industry, going on to say mortgage availability also needs to be examined by officials.

According to a report by the National Housing Federation (NHF), almost 85,000 planned homes have been cut by councils across England.

And in 2009/10 just 123,000 dwellings were built, but the NHF predicts scrapping the housing targets could see that fall below 100,000.
