Property News - Rural house buyers 'priced out' by high values

Young people in rural areas of the UK are struggling to afford homes, an expert has observed.

Press officer at PricedOut.org.uk Katy John explained the average property now costs ten times the typical salary, with many families unable to purchase as a result.

And those who live in the countryside could be facing rising values as a result of interest from investors and others hoping to get their hands on local property.

"Many young people and young families living in rural areas are desperate for the security of owning their own home, yet all too often find themselves in competition with second home owners," said Ms John.

She went on to suggest the government should set targets for the building of homes in such areas, in order to avoid people being displaced.

Her comments came after the National Housing Federation found 65 per cent of those living in the countryside believe high values are pricing out local buyers.
