Property News - London housing proposal 'welcomed'

The proposal to give boroughs in London more control over housing budgets has been welcomed by one expert.

London regional manager at the National Housing Federation Dino Patel said any scheme that leads to the construction of more affordable properties is positive.

"Our members are willing to work with local authorities and the Greater London Authority at a local level to deliver this," he added.

The specialist's comments follow an announcement by the mayor of London, Boris Johnson, on behalf of councils in the capital, who noted districts will be able to negotiate with developers in order to meet the needs of local communities.

Mr Johnson urged councils to enter into the devolution debate in order to "unlock London's housing potential".

He explained if the plans get the green light it will ensure the target of halving serious overcrowding is met.

Last week, housing minister Grant Shapps revealed local communities that construct more homes will be given additional funding to use as they see fit.
