Property News - Rural planning rules could mean more homes are built

Villages could evolve in a unique way if proposed rural planning rules are given the green light, one expert has suggested.

Planner and partner of Smiths Gore Steve Briggs claimed the scheme would make it easier for properties to be constructed in rural areas.

He noted local authorities will be freed from previous constraints that were imposed from a national and regional level.

"Years ago English villages, which were largely built before the planning system came into existence, evolved in their own unique way because they were built by local people to service their respective needs," Mr Briggs added.

He explained it could mean local residents will get the chance to stay in the community they were brought up in rather than being forced to find a home in an urban area due to high prices.

The specialist's comments follow the recent release of a report from the National Housing Federation, which revealed 65 per cent of those living in the countryside think local individuals and young families are being priced out of their village because of high property prices.
