Report finds many homes 'are in need of repair'

Individuals looking to buy a house may want to take the findings of a new survey on board, after it revealed one-in-three dwellings of 50+'s need repairing.

The research from Saga Personal Finance found 34 per of Brits over the age of 50 claim their property is in need of improvements.

However, 15 per cent of respondents admitted they cannot afford to carry out such projects.

Executive chairman at the establishment Andrew Goodsell explained people are living longer, which means they have to stretch their retirement incomes further than they had expected.

"Many retirees find they need additional cash, whether it is to make every day life easier, fund house repairs, take the trip of a lifetime, or to contribute to care in later life," he added.

Last week, Michael Holmes, spokesman for the National Home Improvement Show, observed homeowners should make their dwellings more energy efficient.

He suggested individuals fit condensing boilers, as these can reduce energy bills.
