Property News - Empty property 'could attract squatters'

An expert has advised proprietors to not leave buildings standing empty, as this could attract unlawful tenants.

Landlords should make their property unappealing to squatters, one specialist has suggested.

Founder of Landlord Action Paul Shamplina said both residential and commercial proprietors need to make sure their dwellings are not left unoccupied for long periods of time.

There has been a rise in the number of young professionals squatting, as they claim they cannot afford to rent, he explained.

Mr Shamplina observed unlawful tenants want easy access, so landlords should install security systems to make it harder for people to break into the domicile.

"If there is renovation work being carried out, ensure that the property is secured overnight and be wary as to who has access to the property," he added.

His comments follow the release of new guidelines on the issue from the Ministry of Justice.

The advice to individuals who return to find illegal residents in their homes who refuse to leave is to call the police and report a criminal offence.
