'Spruce the kitchen up' when selling home

An expert has suggested the kitchen is now the most important room in the house.

Homeowners who are planning to put their property on the market may want to spruce up their kitchens, as one expert claimed they are now the "hub of the home".

Editor of Essential Kitchen Bathroom Bedroom, Ronnie Whelan, said they are no longer just a place to prepare food.

"With a trend for more open-plan living, it can cater for many different other activities and makes it worth spending the money on, as well as adding value to your property," she added.

Ms Whelan explained people should mix and match different colours and materials, as this will create an "individual look".

Her comments follow the release of a report by LV=, which revealed the average kitchen is now worth almost £4,000 and is one of the most expensive rooms in a house.

It stated the median spend on the room has increased by 45 per cent since 2005 and this is thought to be driven by the space's transformation as an area to cook in to the main room of the house.
