Property News - Affordable housing needed in rural areas?

One expert has suggested more affordable housing needs to be developed in rural locations.

More affordable housing is needed in rural areas to ensure local people can live in the villages they were brought up in.

This is the view of Fiona Howie, head of planning at Campaign to Protect Rural England, who claimed just a small number of dwellings could make a "big" difference.

She noted domiciles in the countryside usually have to be built to higher standards compared with their urban counterparts.

"They are often really high quality and will blend in with existing houses really well. And they don't have to be ugly and stuck in the outside areas of the village," Ms Howie added.

There are a number of preconceptions about what social housing looks like, she remarked.

According to a recent report from Lloyds TSB, house prices in market towns are 14 per cent higher than their county average.

The largest premium can be found in Buckinghamshire where abodes trade at 145 per cent above the average dwelling value in the county.
