'More dwellings will be built' if locally driven planning system is introduced

An expert has claimed additional houses will be built if local planning rules get the green light.

More homes could be constructed if government proposals to implement a locally-driven planning system are introduced, it has been suggested.

Liz Pearce, chief executive of the British Property Federation, said the scheme has the potential to deliver "better development" within communities.

"However, we would urge ministers to ensure their planning changes help stimulate the growth needed to get the economy moving and pull the country out of debt," she added.

Ms Pearce claimed it is vital incentives to encourage the building of new dwellings and localism does not lead to "nimbyism".

The coalition should press ahead with their initiatives to give local authorities more persuasion to create sustainable developments, including the New Homes Bonus and retention of local business rates, she remarked.

Spokesman for the English Rural Housing Association Martin Collett recently suggested more affordable homes are needed in rural areas.

He explained the popular images of abodes in the countryside are hiding the fact there is a shortage of properties.
