Government 'must develop property solutions'

Property News - Government 'must develop property solutions'

It has been said that problems in the market will continue unless the government meets current housing demands.

The need for new property is more urgent than it has ever been before, according to an expert.

A Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors report has suggested cost-effective and sustainable designs must be incorporated into traditional building approaches, in order to remedy what is being called a "growing crisis".

Primary author of the study, Dr Chris Goodier of Loughborough University, is concerned about the annual deficit of 80,000 houses required.

"While there is no quick fix to the problem, it is important that the government and industry consider more innovative solutions to development," he said.

Unless they heed this advice, Dr Goodier warned that issues such as unaffordable housing and overcrowding are likely to continue.

The report claimed recycled materials and innovative designs could help eco-friendly homes to be built quickly and cheaply.

Earlier this month, MP John Howell said developers would have free rein to construct where and when they wish if communities do not promote growth.
