Property more important than proposals?

Research has revealed that many young couples would plan to buy a home before getting married.

Securing a place on the property market could soon be more popular than walking down the aisle, a survey has suggested.

According to figures gathered by the Post Office, many young couples view purchasing a home together as a commitment that can relieve the pressure to marry.

Furthermore, 42 per cent of 18 to 34-year-olds think that buying together is their best chance of securing a household and therefore seems practical to do before tying the knot.

Mike Cook, head of mortgages at the Post Office, explained: "For some couples buying a house together before marriage is out of financial necessity, rather than just 'playing house'," he said.

He added that his organisation has seen a rise in mortgage applications from friends and family members who have combined their resources.

Last month, Martin Ellis, housing economist at Halifax, claimed significantly improved mortgage affordability should make buying a house easier for first-timers.
