Property News - NLA welcomes 'comfort for vulnerable tenants'

The government's decision to drop plans to reduce housing benefit for those on Jobseeker's Allowance for more than a year has been praised by the National Landlords Association.

The National Landlords Association (NLA) has praised a decision not to reduce housing benefit for those on Jobseeker's Allowance for a year or more.

On Thursday (February 17th) the government released its welfare reform bill and revealed that it had decided not to cut these housing benefits by ten per cent.

According to the NLA, vulnerable tenants are likely to be provided with some comfort by this development, notably those in the private rented sector.

A study by the body showed 76 per cent of housing benefits landlords in the UK are planning to reduce the number of LHA homes they have during this year, while four out of ten hope to do so in the next three months.

David Salusbury, chairman of the NLA, commented: "The government must now acknowledge the concerns of the private rented sector or risk a drop in the supply of affordable housing."

This comes after Vincenzo Rampulla, a spokesman for the body, claimed government changes could make it increasingly likely that landlords will consider pulling out of the market because it makes "financial sense".
