Buy-to-let landlords 'must understand responsibilities'

Understanding responsibilities is an important part of being a buy-to-let landlord, it has been claimed.

Individuals who choose to become a buy-to-let landlord must fully understand their legal responsibilities to their tenants, it has been claimed.

Ian Potter, operations manager at the Association of Residential Letting Agents (ARLA), noted these people must ensure they use an ARLA licensed agent in order to protect their money.

The industry figure explained: "Becoming a buy-to-let landlord is a decision which must not be taken lightly."

He added a consumer who opts for a buy-to-let property is likely to find the decision is a sensible long-term investment, but suggested people must do their research beforehand.

ARLA recommended they look into local background and make sure they have the right mortgage and finance in place before pursuing the venture.

Recent research commissioned by Miller Homes found that public sentiment regarding the housing market has not markedly changed in the last few years - despite fears and uncertainty surrounding the stability of the economy.
