Property News - Private housing construction 'has fallen'

December to February saw a fall in new private housing work, it has been found.

Private housing construction fell in the three months from December 2010 to February 2011 when compared with the three months beforehand, it has been shown.

According to figures from the Office for National Statistics, this sector saw a 23.3 per cent decrease during this time - the largest of any field.

The report found that the total volume of construction output dipped by 18.3 per cent in this period, with new work tumbling by 19.1 per cent and repair and maintenance dropping by 16.8 per cent.

A 21.3 per cent fall was recorded for new private commercial work, while private repair and maintenance also dipped by 20.4 per cent.

However, the volume seen in February was 8.6 per cent greater than the amount estimated for January.

Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation, recently claimed positive house building figures in the last year are representative of the current scale of demand for property throughout the UK.
