Property News - Couples 'forced to share with flatmates'

Many couples are having to share their flat with others, it has been found.

An increasing number of couples in the UK are being forced to share with other flatmates due to increasing costs, new research has suggested.

Carried out by easyroommate.co.uk, the study revealed twice as many pairings are currently looking to live with others than they were last year.

It was found that a 91 per cent hike in this practice has taken place since May 2010, with couples sharing with others now representing 11 per cent of all flat-hunters.

Jonathan Moore, director of the website, said: "Thousands of couples are finding that even when they pool their monthly income, renting a whole property of their own - let alone buying - is currently out of reach."

He observed the boom in rental prices is taking as much of a toll on pairings as it is on individuals.

LandlordZONE director Tom Entwistle recently noted that rental income for landlords is likely to be sustained over the next five years by tenant demand.
