Green Deal 'offers certainty' for landlords

The Green Deal will offer benefits to landlords, it has been claimed.

Landlords in the UK are to enjoy a number of benefits as a result of the government's green housing policy, it has been suggested.

John Alker, director of policy and communications at UK Green Building Council, noted the Green Deal - a legal requirement for proprietors to make their rented properties more energy-efficient - will provide landlords with a fixed date for improvement work.

The industry figure explained the guidelines will come in useful as it will allow those involved to properly plan, invest and innovate beforehand.

"It's about setting out the direction of travel, saying 'this is where we need to get to at this point in time and here's the means by which we get there'," Mr Alker observed.

He added landlords currently have about five or six years to bring their houses up to scratch.

Climate change secretary Chris Huhne recently announced that it will be a legal obligation that rented property meets certain energy efficiency standards by 2016.
