House building planning system 'needs clarity'

The house building industry in the UK requires greater clarity, it has been claimed.

Greater clarity is required with regards to the house building planning system, it has been suggested.

Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation, said that there is currently much confusion surrounding the matter.

The industry figure observed the scheme is completely new and therefore lacks certainty on how it will be put into practice.

He explained: "Local authorities are still unaware and not clear in terms of how it is going to work, so there is a lot of confusion out there."

Close monitoring of the situation is required from the government to make sure the setup runs smoothly, Mr Turner stated, adding immediate action will need to be taken if problems arise.

His comments came after recent figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that the first quarter of 2011 witnessed a fall in construction output of four per cent on that recoded in the previous three-month period.
