Tenancy deposit scheme guidelines 'could have come earlier'

Property News - Tenancy deposit scheme guidelines 'could have come earlier'

Guidance on tenancy deposit schemes could have been published previously, it has been said.

Landlords would have benefited had new documentation detailing the need for consistency within tenancy deposit schemes been published earlier.

That is the opinion of David Lawrenson, buy-to-let private rented sector expert at online resource Letting Focus, who feels that this clarification is "long overdue" as there has been long-standing confusion with regard to the different initiatives available for professionals and their tenants.

Last week (May 5th), saw the production of guidelines drawn up following consultation between bodies such as the Deposit Protection Service and the Tenancy Deposit Scheme.

And while welcoming the release of these points, Mr Lawrenson explained there was a demand for them some time ago particularly in relation to aspects of tenancy agreements such as the level of detail required in inventories compiled by professionals in the buy-to-let market.

"The new guidelines appear to have clarified this a little and suggested some sensible things that landlords who choose to do inventories themselves can do to protect their position," he added.
