Property News - Homebuilding levels enduring a dip?

The number of houses being built appears to be on the wane.

Homebuilding levels in the UK appear to be falling, yet recent research has suggested otherwise.

According to the Glenigan Index, private housing starts dropped by 32 per cent in the three months to May compared with last year, while social housing projects also dipped by 28 per cent across the same period.

However, figures from the National House-Building Council revealed the number of new homes registered by builders in May was 29 per cent greater than that seen in April.

James Abraham, economist at Glenigan - a provider of construction sales leads, established in 1973 - explained the conflicting data shows "two sides of the same story".

He noted construction workers are continuing to build on sites that already exist, while also being discouraged from starting fresh projects due to the economic climate.

"Likewise, public funding cuts mean that there will be a dearth of new social housing projects starting on site in the near future," Mr Abraham added.
