New home building scheme applauded

The National Housing Federation has welcomed the government's new house building scheme.

A government house building scheme - which will see up to 100,000 new properties constructed by 2015 - has been applauded by the National Housing Federation.

The organisation said it welcomed the development, as public land is being sold off to house builders.

Chief executive of the group David Orr said the measure will help to increase the supply of new accommodation, while land should be provided to both private and social housing providers.

"The Federation has long called for unused public land to be made available to developers to build the homes this country desperately needs," he stated.

Ministers explained the move could also see around 25,000 jobs created across the next four years.

Earlier in the month, figures from the Office for National Statistics showed that the total volume of all new construction orders dipped by 23 per cent in the first quarter of 2011 when compared with the final three-month period of 2010.
