Property News - 'Over 50,000 housing starts' in the UK

The financial year ending on March 31st 2011 saw 57,605 housing starts, it has been shown.

More than 50,000 housing starts took place in the UK during the last financial year, new figures have revealed.

The latest statistics regarding the supply of affordable property brought about through the National Affordable Housing Programme, the Local Authority New Build Programme, the Kickstart Housing Delivery Programme and the Property and Regeneration Progamme, showed 57,605 such developments were started in the 12 months to March 31st 2011.

According to the data - which was compiled in conjunction with market homes delivered under the Kickstart Housing Delivery Programme and the Property and Regeneration Programme - there were also 64,242 housing completions in the UK during this time.

It was found that affordable homes accounted for 49,361 of the housing starts on site - 35,690 of which were for social rent, 1,522 for intermediate rent and 12,149 for low-cost home ownership.

The statistics come after the National Housing Federation recently welcomed a new government home building scheme that will see up to 100,000 new dwellings built by 2015.
