'Positive signs' for house-building sector

Despite ongoing constraints, the house-building industry is seeing positive signs, it has been claimed.

The house-building industry in the UK is seeing encouraging signs, despite significant constraints still existing, it has been claimed.

Steve Turner, head of communications at the House Building Federation, noted positive indications are emerging following a number of subdued years.

However, the industry figure explained a number of problems still persist - such as limited home-loan borrowing.

He stated: "Until we see some sensible levels of mortgage lending return, you are not going to see that long-term increase that we need and the consistent improvement in figures."

Moreover, there is also a current lack of viable land, Mr Turner pointed out, claiming the new planning system needs to be focused and working in order to supply the house numbers the nation now requires.

His comments came after the National House-Building Council recently revealed May saw 29 per cent more new homes registered by house-builders than the month before, rising from 8,414 to 10,841.
