Sustainable growth plans welcomed by property industry

The British Property Federation has lent its support to sustainable growth that is driven through local plans.

Proposals for sustainable growth to be driven through local plans have been welcomed by the property industry.

The British Property Federation has lent its backing to the government's draft Presumption in Favour of Sustainable Development, which aims to alter policy in an attempt to improve development and promote environmentally-friendly policies.

Liz Peace, chief executive of the organisation, said the proposal acts as a message showing that encouraging development to take place - where these moves are in conjunction with a local plan - should be the default position.

She noted: "It also incentivises local authorities to produce and keep up to date their local plans - [which is] a welcome discipline," adding, however, that such a presumption does not act as a simple green light for development.

The news comes after the June 2011 Building Societies Association Property Tracker suggested confidence may be returning - albeit at a slow pace - to the housing market.
