Young women 'keen to get on the property ladder'

Female property buyers tend to be younger than men, it has been found.

Young women appear keen to get a foot on the property ladder, with 1.8 million 18 to 34-year-old females looking to buy their first home in the immediate future.

New research from Post Office Mortgages has revealed lady buyers tend to be a year younger than their male counterparts.

The study found 28 per cent of women are looking to enter the housing market, compared to just 20 per cent of young men - suggesting a new generation of FABs (Female and Buying) is emerging.

Mike Cook, head of mortgages at the Post Office, said: "Female first-time buyers (FTBs) are happy to compromise on the more superficial aspects of property ownership because they see buying a home as a financial investment in their future."

He added FTBs, regardless of gender, need to make sure they choose the right mortgage to set them down the right path.

The findings follow the unveiling of a new FTB scheme by housing minister Grant Shapps that aims to provide new-build properties for those entering the housing market for the first time.
