Construction industry 'still facing constraints'

The HBF has claimed the planning system needs to be finalised before the construction industry can take off.

The number of new homes being built in the UK is likely to remain stunted as the construction industry continues to come up against a number of constraints, it has been suggested.

Steve Turner, head of communications at the Home Builders Federation (HBF), stated the planning system needs to be finalised in order to get the sector moving as it should be.

The industry figure said this approach needs to be functioning and delivering in the right areas - with permission - for things to move forward.

Despite such restrictions on longer-term recovery, there appears to be some good signs at present.

Mr Turner pointed out: "The announcement on public land was promising and the announcement on FirstBuy was very positive."

His comments come after recent findings from Glenigan showed that - compared with the same period in 2010 - the underlying value of construction projects in the UK between March and June 2011 was 24 per cent lower.
