Property News - English renting figures revealed

People renting private property in England between 2009 and 2010 paid an average of £156 a week, it has been found.

Renting patterns among people in the UK have been revealed in a newly published study.

The English Housing Survey Household Report 2009-10, made public by the Department for Communities and Local Government - which is trying to decentralise government power through the Big Society initiative - revealed the average weekly fee for private renters during the period was £156.

For social renters, however, this figure stood at £75 a week.

According to the findings, 16 per cent of the 21.6 million households in the UK at this time were taken up by private renters, while 17 per cent were lived in by social renters.

The majority - 67 per cent - were owner-occupiers, despite this declining from the 71 per cent reported in 2005.

It was also shown that 630,000 households in the UK were overcrowded, with more than a third of these residences located in London.

A further 7.9 million properties were adjudged to be under-occupied.
