'New homes for rent' through NHT scheme

Hundreds of new and affordable homes are going to become available to rent as part of an NHT initiative.

An initiative from the National Housing Trust (NHT) is to result in hundreds of new and affordable homes becoming available to rent, it has been claimed.

Alex Neil, cabinet secretary for infrastructure and capital investment, said the scheme - being led by the Scottish Government and Scottish Futures Trust, which delivered £129 million of net benefits and savings to investments in Scotland during 2010-2011 - will result in developers and local authorities providing funding to ensure the newly-constructed homes can be rented out at below-market rates.

Mr Neil said he is delighted with the project, the model for which he claimed is the first of its kind in the UK.

"It will deliver hundreds of new homes, secured for very little taxpayers' money, support jobs and stimulate construction in response to the recession," he explained.

The politician added housing associations, councils and developers have all risen to the challenge to make such a programme possible.
