Property News - Renters 'paying more' despite downturn

Despite the recession, rents in the UK have continued to climb, it has been found.

People renting property are continuing to pay escalating sums for their accommodation, despite the recent economic downturn.

This is the finding of new research from Endsleigh, which revealed the average cost of such living has jumped by four per cent since 2009.

The organisation noted this is way above 2010's inflation rate, which dipped as low as three per cent.

Carlos Thompson, head of business development at Endsleigh, said the rising costs suggest the lettings market has remained strong throughout the recession.

The industry figure observed tenants should be safe in the knowledge that most landlords will not be upping rents this year.

"However, the very nature of rented accommodation means there can be unexpected surprises, with the possibility of tenants falling into difficulty, or leaving suddenly," he added.

The findings come after recent research from YouGov, carried out on behalf of Shelter, found 16 per cent of tenants have encountered problems with their proprietor in the last ten years.
