Property News - Tenants 'have a right to complain'

The NHF has teamed up with Shelter and the Tenant Participation Advisory Service to highlight a tenant's right to complain.

A tenant's right to complain has been highlighted by a trio of organisations that are speaking against a clause in the government's Localism Bill.

The section notes that renters cannot take a problem straight to their housing ombudsman - and the National Housing Federation (NHF), Shelter and the Tenant Participation Advisory Service (Tpas) have written a joint letter objecting to the move.

Published in the Independent, the document spells out concerns over the restrictive nature of the bill, labelling the direction as disempowering for renters and costly to the public.

Chief executive of Tpas Michelle Reid commented: "We worry that this procedure puts an additional hurdle between tenants and the proper resolution of their complaints."

David Orr, chief executive of the NHF - which is the representative of 1,200 independent and not-for-profit housing associations in England - claimed the bill will serve to increase red tape and lead to fewer and less successful complaints.
