Property News - Tenants 'should know their rental rights'

Landlords need to keep the structure of their property in good repair, it has been claimed.

People renting property should be aware of their rights when it comes to the upkeep of the residence they are staying in, it has been suggested.

Citizen's Advice has compiled a list of tips for private tenants to keep in mind when dealing with their landlords.

The organisation noted individuals renting a dwelling are entitled to a place that boasts a structure that is kept in good repair by the proprietor.

Also, heating and hot water systems must be maintained in full working order, while details about repair responsibilities can often be found in a written tenancy agreement.

Gillian Guy, chief executive at Citizen's Advice - which provides free, impartial and independent advice on people's rights and responsibilities - said: "Everyone should have the right to live in a safe and decent home, but we see a lot of private tenants who are too scared to complain about terrible conditions."
