Property News - 16% 'have issues with landlord'

Many people are scared of what might happen should they raise issues with their landlord, it has been found.

A number of people in the UK have had issues with their landlord while renting property, but many have done nothing about the situation.

This is the finding of a new YouGov survey carried out on behalf of housing charity Shelter, which revealed 16 per cent of Britons have encountered problems with their proprietor in the last ten years.

However, seven per cent claimed they did nothing to remedy the situation because they were concerned about what the consequences might be.

It was shown that 66 per cent of those questioned agree that clearer and stronger guidelines are required for landlords to protect private tenants.

Campbell Robb, chief executive of Shelter - which was formed in 1966 by the Reverend Bruce Kenrick - said: "The government has to recognise its responsibility to protect this vast and growing population of private tenants, especially when our research has proved that generation rent want better rules."
