FTBs 'require long-term govt help'

Property News - FTBs 'require long-term govt help'

Lack of mortgage availability is only one concern for FTBs, it has been claimed.

First-time buyers (FTBs) looking to get a foot on the property ladder need long-term assistance from the government in order to do so, it has been suggested.

Katy John, press officer for Priced Out - a campaign pushing for more affordable housing in the UK - said a lack of availability regarding mortgages is only one issue FTBs currently have to contend with.

Ms John advised FTBs to save as much money as they can in order to get the best available deal, but claimed the Conservative-Liberal Democrat coalition should be doing more to help people get into the market.

"The government needs to focus on the longer term objectives of building more houses, continuing with its planning reforms to free up more land to build on," she added.

Her comments came in response to new findings from the Council of Mortgage Lenders, which showed the total value of loans approved to FTBs in July escalated by five per cent, yet the number of such agreements dipped two per cent in the same period.
