Property News - University goers 'likely to choose student housing'

Living in student digs is cheaper than residing in halls, it has been claimed.

An increasing number of university goers are likely to choose shared houses above student halls, it has been suggested.

Jonathan Moore, director of Easyroommate.co.uk, noted this type of accommodation is around 23 per cent cheaper than campus-based living, while increases in fees will mean scholars keeping an even closer eye on their expenditure.

The industry figure explained: "We anticipate a growing number will elect to move to digs for their first year and avoid university halls altogether to keep costs down."

Moreover, student accommodation could prove highly lucrative for property investors, with undergraduates shelling out around £325 a month for a room, while each home typically houses about four people.

Mr Moore noted areas with high demand among students include Brighton, Cambridge and Oxfordshire, closely followed by London, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Bristol, Belfast and Manchester - a city that is home to both the University of Manchester and the Manchester Metropolitan University.
