Property News - Flatshare rents 'on the increase'

Flatshare rents are currently rising at almost five per cent a year.

Flatshare rents in the UK are currently on the rise, with individuals spending a significant portion of their income on living costs, new research has suggested.

According to Easyroommate.co.uk, people living in such a manner are using 22 per cent of their net salary on accommodation - a level set to rise to 33 per cent by 2020, if current trends are anything to go by.

In addition, the website noted rents for those living in a shared property are increasing at almost five per cent every year.

Jonathan Moore, director of Easyroommate, said: "At a time when inflation is running wild, the cost of renting is escalating, placing a growing number of renters under financial stress."

The industry figure suggested flatsharing could prove the cheapest option for UK adults hoping to keep their monthly expenditure as low as possible.

Rental increases may be kept to a minimum at present, however, as Ed Mead, director of Douglas & Gordon, recently suggested landlords are unlikely to impose any significant hikes in the current climate.
