UK housing to be transformed by Green Deal?

The Green Deal could help produce more energy efficient buildings.

The housing stock in the UK could be transformed as a result of the government's Green Deal, it has been suggested.

Gordon Miller, co-founder and sustainability and communications director at Sustain Worldwide, noted the arrangement might result in properties across the nation becoming increasingly energy efficient.

The industry figure was speaking in response to an announcement from the Department of Energy and Climate Change, which confirmed the Energy Act has been passed into law.

This means an implementation of the Green Deal could be on the cards for autumn 2012 and Mr Miller described the scheme as a significant legislation piece.

He explained: "The improved energy efficiency will benefit those who have made significant energy efficient improvements to their homes because the property will score higher on the energy performance certificate."

The act would serve to get rid of the upfront cost involved in implementing energy efficiency measures, such as draught proofing and loft, cavity and external wall insulation, Mr Miller added.
