Downsizing property 'should be done in stages'

People should take it room by room when downsizing.

Downsizing property by moving from a large house to a smaller one is a process that should be carried out in stages.

This is the advice of Catherine Hakens, managing director and owner of Haken Relocation Services, who claimed such action needs to be done on a room by room basis.

The industry figure, who has worked in the UK, Australia and New Zealand, noted it can be a wise move to take photographs of items people are leaving behind - as these can then be recorded for the future.

She said it is a process "of going through the wardrobes, going through the cupboards, bringing all the goods from the loft down, clearing out the garages - taking it small steps at a time".

Making plans could be done for a couple of hours everyday across a period of a few weeks in order to split the process up and make it more manageable.
