'Positive signs' for house building sector

Implementation of the Green Deal will see many properties retrofitted.

There are positive signs on the horizon for the UK house building industry, it has been suggested.

Brian Berry, director of external affairs at the Federation of Master Builders - which has been in operation for more than 70 years and has around 11,000 vetted members in the UK - noted the government's commitment to reducing carbon emissions could be good news for the construction sector.

This is because implementation of the Green Deal will get underway next year - with around 14 million properties set to be retrofitted by 2020 as a result.

Mr Berry observed: "That, potentially, is a huge market in terms of retrofitting which offers great opportunities for the construction industry."

However, the challenge facing the sector is whether or not the initiative is able to catch on successfully, as take off is expected to be slow.

The industry figure added an increase in energy efficiency would create a lot of new job opportunities in the field.
