Private rented sector 'important for UK housing industry'

The National Landlords Association claims the private rented sector will continue to play an increasingly important role in the UK housing industry.

The private rented sector is to play an increasingly important role in the UK housing industry, according to the National Landlords Association (NLA).

Terrie Alafat, director of housing growth and affordable housing, explained it is an exciting time for the industry as property continues to be at the top of the government's agenda.

Speaking at the NLA's annual national conference, she said: "There is recognition about the flexibility of the sector. It isn't a last resort, it is actually a sector which is the choice for people who do want that flexibility."

Ms Alafat explained private rental market will continue to be an increasingly popular option over the course of the coming years as home ownership is particularly difficult for first-time buyers due to the lack of mortgage availability and social housing is under pressure.

The NLA represents the interests of some 12 million landlords currently operating in the UK and seeks to provide a fair regulatory environment for both buy-to-let home owners and their tenants.
